Build Wealth. Protect Your Family. Create a Legacy.

GOOD INCOME BUT FEELING BEHIND?

You have a good career and a strong household income. You may have an RRSP, TFSA, RESP, life insurance, a mortgage, workplace benefits and perhaps other investments. You are doing many of the things you have been told responsible families should do.

But there is still one problem:

How does it all fit together?

This is something I see with many successful families. They don't necessarily lack financial products. What they often lack is a clear structure connecting everything together.

How much should you be putting into your RRSP versus your TFSA? Are you saving enough for retirement? Is your insurance actually protecting what needs to be protected? How does paying down your mortgage fit alongside investing? Are you taking advantage of the right tax strategies? What happens to everything you have built when you die? And are all these decisions moving your family toward the same long-term goal?

When each decision is made separately, your finances can begin to feel like a collection of accounts, policies and investments rather than one coordinated financial plan.

Financial planning should connect the pieces.

Your income, cash flow, debt, investments, taxes, insurance, retirement, estate planning and the legacy you want to leave should not exist in separate boxes. Each should have a purpose, and each should support the others.

That is why the question is not simply:

“Am I doing the right financial things?”

A better question is:

“Do all the pieces of my financial life work together?”

Because building wealth isn't about collecting financial products.

It's about building a financial structure designed around the life, family and legacy you want to create.

FROM INCOME TO WEALTH

Your income is the raw material.

The goal is to systematically convert part of that income into assets, investments, protection and eventually a legacy.

That means knowing where your money is going. It means having an emergency reserve. It means protecting your family against risks that could destroy what you are building. It means using accounts such as your TFSA, RRSP, RESP and FHSA intentionally rather than simply having them.

And eventually, it means thinking beyond your own retirement.

What opportunities could the wealth you build today create for your children and grandchildren?

That is a very different way of thinking about money.

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY MEANS PLANNING AHEAD

Building wealth is only one part of a strong financial plan. You also need to make sure your family knows what to do if you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself—or when you eventually pass away.

Three documents can play an important role in that preparation: a Last Will and Testament, Enduring Power of Attorney, and Personal Directive.

Your Will sets out how you want your estate handled after your death and identifies who will be responsible for carrying out those wishes. An Enduring Power of Attorney allows someone you trust to manage your financial and legal affairs if necessary. A Personal Directive addresses personal matters and allows you to designate someone to make personal decisions for you if you lose the capacity to make them yourself.

Yet many families continue to put these documents off.

The issue is not simply paperwork. Without proper planning, the people you love may be left trying to determine what you would have wanted during an already difficult time.

Your September Action

Ask yourself three simple questions:

Do I have all three documents?
Are they current?
Does my family know where they are?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, this is a good month to address it.

You have worked hard to build and protect your family's future. Make sure your wishes are documented too.

NEW ON THE LOYOLA WEALTH MANAGEMENT YOUTUBE

Good Income but Feeling Behind?

This month, I am launching a new direction for the Loyola Wealth Management YouTube channel.

The focus will be straightforward financial conversations for families who earn good money but want to become more intentional about what they are building with it.

In our first video, Good Income but Feeling Behind?, I explore why families can earn six-figure household incomes and still feel financially stuck—and the changes that can begin moving them forward.

We will be discussing topics such as building wealth, investing, retirement planning, protecting your family, reducing financial blind spots and creating generational wealth.

NEW BOOK:
INCOME INTO LEGACY

How to Build Wealth That Strengthens Your Family for Generations

For years, I have worked with families and communities around one recurring question:

What are we actually building?

That question eventually became the foundation for my new book, Income Into Legacy.

The book challenges the idea that the ultimate financial goal should simply be accumulating enough money to retire comfortably.

Retirement matters. But I believe we can think bigger.

What if the income you earn during your lifetime could help create opportunities long after you are gone?

Income Into Legacy is about turning income into assets, protecting what you build, developing strong financial habits within the family, preparing the next generation to manage wealth responsibly and thinking like a 100-year family rather than planning for only one lifetime.

You do not need to already be wealthy to begin building a legacy.

You need to become intentional about what you do with what you have.

ONE QUESTION FOR YOUR FAMILY THIS MONTH

At some point this September, sit down with your spouse or family and ask:

“If we continue managing money exactly as we are today for the next 10 years, where will we be?”

Don't worry about having the perfect answer.

The purpose of the conversation is to identify whether your current financial habits are actually taking you toward the future you want.

Then ask one more question:

“What do we want our income to build?”

That conversation could be more valuable than another discussion about investment returns.

YOUR SEPTEMBER FINANCIAL CHECK-IN

Before the month ends, review five things:

  1. Cash Flow: Do you know where your money went last month?
  2. Emergency Fund: Could your household handle an unexpected financial setback?
  3. Investments: Are you consistently contributing toward long-term wealth?
  4. Protection: Would your family's financial plan survive if something happened to one of the primary income earners?
  5. Legacy: Are you building assets that could eventually create opportunities for the next generation?

You don't need to fix everything this month.

Identify the biggest gap and start there.

WANT TO KNOW WHERE YOU STAND?

A good income is valuable.

But a good income without a plan can disappear one paycheque at a time.

If you're earning good money but still wondering whether you're doing enough—or whether all the pieces of your financial life are actually working together—I invite you to take the next step.

We can look at where you are today, what you're trying to build, and the financial blind spots that may be standing between the two.

Until Next Month

Wealth is not simply about accumulating more.

It is about creating security, opportunity and choices—for yourself, for the people you love and, ultimately, for those who come after you.

Your income gives you the raw material.

What you build with it is up to you.
